A: Reymark Asahid, he said I suddenly interrupted and asked his full name confused about what to say he asked his elder sister beside him “ te unsa gani atong middle name, kanang L gud?” (“what is our middle name? What’s the letter L in my name?) Luciano, her sister said. He then told me that his full name was Reymark Luciano Asahid.

Q: Imong mama ba ang imong motivation? (Is your mother your motivation?)

A: oo ug ang akong mga amigo sa school, (Yeah it’s my mom and my friends that motivates me to go to school.)

Having interviewed Reymark’s sister as well , I have learned that Reymark is not that good in school in terms of academics that is the reason behind why he is still on the fifth grade though he is already 13 years old—a normal age for a 1st year high school. During my first day of encounter with him I have witnessed his inferiority as a learner because he’s not that fluent in speaking yet. That is what I found one of the reasons why he still can’t excel academically. Trying to be a little more connected to this interview I let him read an article on a book that he has. It was indeed a shocking revelation to me because Reymark really don’t have a clear gist on the phonetic structure of the second language. He oftentimes mispronounces words and he don’t understand what he is reading. Having a little grasp on my interviewee’s background I ended this first encounter with him with a talk with her sister. I asked her to really teach Reymark to read. And with an affirmative reply Reymark’s sister did say that she would.

The Cave

One sunny afternoon I was on my class field trip. We were going to a bat cave. When we got to the cave I couldn't believe my eyes I saw a gigantic bat! No! Wait! I got closer and saw that is was a fire breathing dragon! It had bright green scales and it's teeth were as long as my arm. Everyone got crushed and was killed except me. As I ran out I saw a skeleton in a corner wearing armor and holding a sword. I really wanted to be a knight for Halloween so I changed into the armor and grabbed the sword and shield. I raced toward the fire breathing dragon and slashed it like it was ham. I always wondered what a dragon tasted like so... I ate it! It tasted like fried shrimp!

My Favorite Jacket

I love my jacket because it is very soft. It has fur inside and makes me cozy and warm. I take it almost everywhere I go. It is black with peach colored stripes. I have been wearing it for almost two years and I still love it a lot. One day my mom gave me a different jacket to wear. I told her no I didn't like the other jacket. I took my favorite and put it on and went to school. My jacket feels like a friend to me. When I misplace it I won't stop looking for it. When it doesn't fit me anymore I will give it to my little brother. Whenever I wear it I can't stop thinking about how warm and comfortable it is!

A Seminole Boy

One summer morning with the ball of gold called the sun shining down, Red Eyed Hawk went hunting for the first time. First he went into the Sweatroom where no girl or woman was allowed to go. He uses a scraper that his father, Brave Buffalo has made especially for him to scrape off his scent. Then he washes up while his mom, Swift Deer, is gathering some berries to eat.Red Eyed Hawk's friend, Blue Eyed Rabbit is joining the hunt. Carefully they walk through the forest with the icy cold wind blowing fast in their face blowing their scent away from their prey. Suddenly they see a golden brown deer all chubby standing there. Red Eyed Hawk said, "There is a feast in front of us." They crawled behind a tree. BANG! They shot the deer! The boys were excited. They tied the deer with rabbit skins to a stick and brought it home. They cut the fur off. Then they cut the meat into strips to dry. They will save it to eat in the cold of winter.

My Room

My brother David and I share a room, but my sister always comes in and makes a big mess and we have to clean it up. She puts clothes in our closet, and we throw them out. It's our room, not hers. The other things she does is she combs her hair in our room. She is annoying! Sometimes she listens to music and does her 5th grade homework in our room too.One day she hooked her black sweater on a hook on our door. My brother got the sweater and hid it, and we didn't tell anyone where it was. Too bad we had to give it back or our dad was going to hit us. She should stay in her own room!1

The Second Encounter

Date: October 9, 2011

Time: 2:00 - 4:30 pm

Location: Reymark Asahid’s Residence

A week after I have started doing this interview with Reymark, the first thing I have done is letting him see some downloaded video of the alphabet since it was glitch that I have seen that Reymark lack. The video is entitled “Phonics Song” (this video is in the DVD) I have downloaded it from “youtube”. I let him listen to it via headset on his ears and the next time around I let him hear it without the headset. I asked him what was better (listening with headset on or without it) and he answered “with the headset on” he is fond of listening music on headset in the internet cafes as he said. Furthermore, he said that he loves to listen to sounds or audios repeatedly so that he could memorize it.

After such motivational activity, I have returned to the with some reading materials. It has the same content but when I let him read it still Reymark really don’t know some simple words in the English language. I have brought four (4) short stories for Reymark during this day. And on how he was able to read it that day I recorded it with my cellphone. He’s got a very soft voice while reading those short stories. I even have heard her mother saying something to a neighbor who was a visitor of hers that time(“naulaw siguro na kay ung mostorya kusog man kayo na siya magstorya”) “Reymark must be shy, because he’s got a loud voice when he talk but when he reads we can’t hardly hear it.

I have presented the short stories this way :

The Last Encounter

Date: October 14, 2011

Time: 8:00-10:00am

Location: Internet Café

This time I started the session with my interviewee with some video clips again the first video clip was about Jesus giving some bread to the people as Reymark describes it. The video clip was entitled “The Miracle of Jesus” which is in the DVD as well.

In the second video I let Reymark with an Indian video clip entitled “Pachatantra Tales: The wise Mother” he describes this one a story of a bad boy and a crab.

While I still printed something I let Reymark have fun on his Facebook. It was an awestruck for me because in manipulating the computer Reymark was very prompt and speedy. It come into my senses that somehow Reymark has better learning style with a computer on since it was his interest. I saw him playing a game which I don’t know how to play just like ‘The Sims” and “Tetris” Whoa! He was good at it.

In my last activity with Reymark I let him read a poem because he told me he is not that good on it. I let him read the poem by Liana Mahoney which I have found in the internet and is projected below. I also let him answer the questions asked as shown on the next pages.

Still, Reymark has a big difficulty in reading up to this day. He still don’t know how to focus. But I guess Reymark would learn better if he would be given enough time to rctice and somehow support from the parents and teachers as well.

Conclusion

Whichever way you choose be patient, consistent and above all creative. Creativity is very important to keep any child's interest and enthusiasm at all times.

Throughout my interview I have learned that the strategies that I have used on the latter part are ineffective to learners like Reymark who is a kinesthetic learner he wants to do something and has less focus if he does sedentary activities only.

But then I have realized that indeed as a future teacher and parent I would play a part in the learning process of a student/my offspring I must therefore have a gist on the basic and somehow effective way of rearing children for them learn every learning that they should learn

In addition I have proved that motivation I indeed is a big part of the educative process especially in teaching fundamental and foundational in the language acquisition. And indeed listening is indeed a macro-skill since it is an integral part of reading. I could say that you could not reading if you don’t know how to listen first.

Evidences

1 By this time I let Reymark follow after me. I let him listen to me while Readig the story with somehow the right intonation and pronunciation. But the Reymark was unease that time he still have a practice he said. Finally we ended the session with him reading these four stories as a whole

2After reading this story I asked him what is this all about? He did not replied that time he ‘s confused I guess so he read it again and finally told me that it was all about a man who works for a friend”.

3 He has a lot of mispronounced words as he reads this one. He was kinda nervous I guess. And when I asked him the same question I asked him on the latter part he told me that this one talks about the a boy who loves his jacket.

4 While reading this story still have those mispronounced words as you can hear on the recorded audio while he was reading. And asking him the same question in the first and second Reymark told me that the story was all about a group of people who have summer in the morning “nagsummer sila sa morning”-Reymark.

5 This time Reymark read the words repeatedly, I asked him to read it louder but he refused to do so because he shy he said. Lastly , I asked the same question, he told me that they were making assignments (”naghimo sila og assignment”).
